OUGD404 Brief 2 - Task 2, Folds

I have decided to design a book which explains how to make
a hotdog fold, I have made a mock up to see where the pages
will need to be when placed in inDesign. I also looked on youtube
to help me write instructions for my book.

I illustrated my instructions to make it easy on the eye swell as the
fact it looks hand printed then, My actual book will be made via
the hot dog fold.

I have drawn my illustrations and then scanned them into illustrator
to live trace and apply to my instruction booklet.

OUGD404 Brief 2 - Task 2 Types of Folds

Task 2 Types of Folds

In groups we created as many folds as possible without using
glue or staples or any type of bind but being restricted to just
using paper and cuts. (to create a book)

Triangle/Stair fold - Has a total of 8 pages I like this design because of it being
staggered although because it is staggered paper space for writing/drawing on
is lost, To do this I used A2 paper cut in half to make 2 squares fold onto each
otherI then divided the space between 2 on one half and on the other creating a
diagonal fold not once but twice creating more pages.

Hot Dog fold - This is the most functional use of paper it creates the most
space to utilise to create this you take a sheet of paper fold it in half, In half
again and once more to create 8 pages for this to work you need to create a
cut between the middle section going across 2 folds, you then pull the paper
out and simply fold.

Trouser Fold - Fold the paper 3 times to create a sections, cut from the bottom
up 3 sections leaving one behind, fold the paper back up and close this then
works as a normal landscape book but then can be opened to look like
'trousers' to utilise all the space.

Mountain and Valley Fold, There is only 4 pages in this type of fold but it has
a creative aesthetic to it. You just simply fold in half landscapely then once
portrait and then make 3 small folds and the last folding point.

OUGD404 Brief 2 - Task 1 What is a Book?

What is a book?

(taught lesson)

We got in groups in this session and were asked several questions
to answer.

What is a book?
A book can be anything arguably, it can be a..

Collection of pages
- What are pages?? A context that is used to communicate
so in response to a collection of pages it does not necessarily need to
be a page.

This is because a book is a personal interpretation.

Articulation
- to pass on information
-putting something in a book
-words and how it is written

Collection of visual stimuli
-It doesn't necessarily need to be words
what is a basic form of collection?
-A group - A collection of something
It could be a website etc.

This question really made me think about the actual term book and what
it means to be a book does it need to be physical to be a book? I always
assumed so but it is apparent a book doesn't need to be physical to exsist
this is because the term book is a collection and a collection can be anything.

What is the purpose of a book?

  • Inform
  • Educate
  • Entertain
  • Inspire
  • Communicate
  • To convince
  • To evolve
  • To create controversy
  • Illusion of intelligence
  • The truth
  • To escape
  • To exsist forever there isn way of it not existing even if it is removed,
someone somewhere will remember it.
A book can have many purposes it is unto both the author and reader
to determine what exact purpose they have.

How is a collection organised?

  • Paragraphs
  • Chronological order
  • Sequence
  • To tell a story
  • Choice
  • Thermatically
it really is up to the person who writes or designs the book to order
and organise a book there a several ways of organising books for
example...

Another more literally sense of how you can organise a book..

  • Stitching
  • folded
  • glued
  • bound
  • stapled
  • weld
  • treasury tags
  • zip ties/acro binding clips
  • paper clips
  • spiral bound
A book can be bound creatively as well as organised.

What is your groups favourite book? and its purpose?
  • Dominoes menu - Excites
  • Wreck this journal - Entertains
  • Beatrix potter collections - Nostalgic and aesthetically pleasing
  • A to Z visual ideas - Informs
  • Auction buyers guides - Informs
  • Ryan Gosling - Colour me good - Interactive/Entertains
