OUGD404 Brief 2 - Developments

To start on designing my book I used influence from Design Rules
and Know your onions and of course Vignellis canon.

Here is the first 12 pages of my book, I presented this in a self initiated
crit.. I had no negative response it was suggested to try using even
cheaper stock such as layout or newsprint!

OUGD404 Brief 2 - Annotation of Vignelli Canon

To create my book I have been annotating and making notes
on Vignelli's canon so when it comes to changing the content
it will be easier to do so.
I have highlighted key sentences and words in which I can respond
too, as I have found out I am not able to change every page, as
not every page can be made contradictory,
as I will of already done so on a previous page similar pages for
example pragmatics and semantics section is very similar they all
have a similar concept it would not make sense to do the same on
every page  I am doing the opposite to what vignelli sates in his book
for example on the spread 'Semiotics' he states.. That without narrative
and order and consistency something can become vulgar he says
adding random swashes of colour can ruin design etc so if i were to
respond to that  would do exactly what he says not too by adding swashes
of colour etc.

OUGD404 - Brief 2, Tetley Gallery - Book Fair

Tetley Gallery - Book Fair

Today I visited the Tetley gallery in Leeds to get involved with
the book fair, It was really interesting to see the binds and prints.
I was really impressed with the precision print stall it was knowledgable
experience to see the variation of printing available to me i also learnt
a bit about techniques and stop this hopefully will influence my
design principles.

OUGD404 Brief 2 - Binding experimentation

As I have chosen what bind I would like to do I decided to
create a small mock up to see how I can make it, It is a couple of
pamphlet stitched books sewn together I have calculated that I will
need 8 Booklets with an average of 12 pages in each to have the
page content of 96 (Not including front and back cover) I would need
to attach a hard back cover to protect the book, I could possibly screen
print the cover to add some luxury to the book.

OUGD404 Brief 2 - Proposal

What is the content? and why?
Vignelli's canon, I feel this will give me a lot to play around with
alongside showing my typesetting skills easily.

What is your concept?
I intend to do the opposite Vignelli has written in the book to make
it fun and silly also contradictory to the initial concept of his book.

What is the intended purpose?
To inform but also create humour.

Target audience?
All ages, interest in graphic design. Practicing proffessionals
and design students.

How will you print your book?
Looking at the cost in the print room in college it will cost around £30/40
to print due to the amount of pages and bleed to save costs I could make
the book smaller I could alternatively go with the theme of my opposite book
by printing it cheaply on a lower toner.. this would be cost effective and
have context to the book. good design = good printing... I would have to
consider stock as I feel copier paper for this would be too cheap I would
consider a thicker stock and matte so the ink and toner settles better.

How will you bind it?
I quite like the idea of using a bind which will open the book flat this is more
for convenience and ease rather then aesthetic although there is a bind which
I am particularly fond of a perfect bind without the cover.. for example..
its almost a thread sewn bind without the covering.

I recently visited vernon street library to look at their artist collection books
this is where I got most of my inspiration i am yet to write about it yet but
intend to do at a later date.

What will I research?
  • For starters I will need to read vignelli's canon back to front to think
of ideas for the content.

I am currently reading 2 books for influence;
  • Know your onions by Drew De Soto &
  • Graphic Design Rules By Sean Adams, Peter Dawson, John Foster and Tony Seddon
I also need to consider the production
  • Binds
  • And Stock
