John Lewis Partnership in their own words.
The John Lewis Partnership is a visionary and successful way of doing business, boldly putting the happiness of Partners at the centre of everything it does. It's the embodiment of an ideal, the outcome of nearly a century of endeavour to create a different sort of company, owned by Partners dedicated to serving customers with flair and fairness.
All 88,700 permanent staff are Partners who own 46 John Lewis shops across the UK (32 department stores, 12 John Lewis at home and shops at St Pancras International and Heathrow Terminal 2), 346 Waitrose supermarkets (www.waitrose.com), an online and catalogue business, johnlewis.com(www.johnlewis.com), a production unit and a farm. The business has annual gross sales of over £10bn. Partners share in the benefits and profits of a business that puts them first.
When our founder, John Spedan Lewis, set up the Partnership, he was careful to create a governance system, set out in our Constitution, that would be both commercial allowing us to move quickly to stay ahead in a competitive industry, and democratic giving every Partner a voice in the business they co-own. His combination of commercial acumen and corporate conscience, so ahead of its time, is what makes us what we are today.
The John Lewis Partnership is one of a growing number of businesses with an employee-owned structure and is a member of the Employee Ownership Association (EOA), the not-for-profit membership body representing the sector.
Who do JLP own
Sustainability is critical to the Partnership – it's written into our Constitution. In our 2014 review, we've explored how we're responding to a wide range of issues across our value chain – from the way we source our products to how we engage with customers.
My opinion
John Lewis is a retail store that has a wide variety of products from clothes to toys to perfume. Because John Lewis is versatile they pride themselves on being current and paying attention to the customers needs and trends. Not only are John Lewis on point with trends and the current market they are well ahead with making their part toward the economical issues. John Lewis prides themselves with their ethos towards sustainability. When visiting John Lewis this was evident on entering the store was a section for a number of different recyclable bins for card, paper, plastics and even batteries.
